Battle Royale on the Devil’s Plain
Claregalway Castle Shield 2018
September 29th and 30th will see Medieval Armoured Combat Ireland’s 4th annual international tournament on foot, the Claregalway Castle Shield, play out on the grounds of Claregalway Castle. This 15th century castle built on the banks of the Clare River continues to be faithfully restored to its former glory through the hard work of Eamonn O’Donoghue and his dedicated team of stonemasons. The castle takes its name from the ominous sounding original Gaelic name from the region, Clár an Diabhail – the Devil’s Plain.
On this autumn weekend the castle bailey will echo to the clash of steel as 30 Knights from Scotland, England, the USA, Quebec and of course Ireland fight for glory under four different disciplines. The Sword & Shield – a tough battle of wills where strength is a valuable ally, The Longsword – a tactical fight where speed and mobility are key, The Polearm – a vicious long range tactical encounter, and finally The Bohurt – a group match where any weapon may be used and the rules are simple, the winner is the last team standing.
All are welcome to come and view the spectacle which will include Ireland’s two time ladies longsword world champion Lara Serviolle in action across the weekend. Lara will be joined by knights from across Ireland so be sure to join us to cheer for your champion.
There will be a complete medieval feel to the weekend with medieval music, food and pageantry for all to enjoy alongside the tournament.
